You have a landlord to take care of problems that come up, and the flexibility to move somewhere new whenever your lease comes up. Also, for many people, buying a home near a desired location (like the beach) may not be financially possible, but renting is.
If you own a property and aren’t read to sell it, renting it out can be a great option. Many people do this while waiting for their property to appreciate in value.
